Cláudia Gomes Oliveira

Language Consultant | Literary Translator

I am a written word enthusiast.

I provide Portuguese language consultancy and translation services (English and Spanish into European Portuguese) to organizations and institutions of the cultural and educational sectors, with a focus on inclusive and accessible language.

My literary translation work includes English and Spanish books of fiction and non-fiction translated into European Portuguese. I am particularly interested in translating literary works by women.

I am the translator of The Manningtree Witches (As Bruxas de Manningtree), by award-winning English author and poet A. K. Blakemore (Granta Book UK, 2021), a historical novel honoured with the Desmond Elliot Prize, based on true events from the period known for the heinous "witch hunts" in seventeenth-century England (Aurora, Portugal, 2024).

On the realm of children's and young adult literature, I must highlight the translation of the series The Improbable Tales of Baskerville Hall (As Lendas Improváveis de Baskerville Hall), by Ali Standish (HarperCollins, 2023), an imaginative and adventurous portrayal of young Arthur Conan Doyle, the creator of Sherlock Holmes (Editorial Presença, Portugal, 2024).

My training comprises an MEng in Urban Engineering (University of Lisbon), an MA in Film Studies (University of Exeter), a Diploma in Translation and Linguists Information Technologies (Camões Institute), a Certificate in Creative Writing (Cia. EU) and several Certificates in Inclusive and Accessible Language (Access Culture). I studied Theatre and Dance (in Lisbon and London) and worked in the artistic and cultural Portuguese scene for over a decade.
